Pen Cayetano created Punta Rock in 1980 and formed in his homecountry Belize the "Turtle Shell Band and a new generation of music started.

The band included six members:

  • Pen Cayetano ( lead guitar, lead- & background vocals)
  • Mohobob Flores( lead turtle shells, lead- & background vocals)
  • Faltas Nolberto (cricket snare, percussion, background vocals)
  • Myme Martinez (double drum, background vocal)
  • Jeep Lewis ( shakers, whistle, background vocals)
  • Higgins Higginio ( small Turtle shells, background vocals)

The music of the Turtle Shell Band is basically build on the Garifuna Punta rhythm. Cayetano quickened the pace , added the electric guitar to the line-up, amplified the sound, and added the turtle shells to round out the percussion. Punta, as a form of traditional Garifuna music, continued to exist in its original form. Punta Rock became powerful and carrying messages o and developed cultural aware-ness and educate. The Turtle Shell Band took the Punta Rock out of Belize across the Caribbean and the USA. They performed twice at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival). Once or twice a year the band members have a reunion in Dangriga, Belize.
